Does the Earth Move?

Everybody believes that the earth goes around the sun, don't they? Well, not quite? Atheists do, evolutionists do, unbelievers do, most scientists do, and many "Christians" do. Does the fact that so many people believe it really make it true? There was a time when no one believed it. But we are much more advanced scientifically aren't we? They probably thought that as well. Think about it.

To my knowledge, no one ever arrived at that conclusion by reading the Bible. In fact, no one would believe that the earth goes around the sun unless someone taught it to them. It is a neat theory and is graphically described in science textbooks, even Christian textbooks. But is it true?

"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). Then, according to verse 2, darkness preceeded light, even as it does in the human heart. God divided the light from the darkness, and the evening and the morning was the first day. Now, without being tedious, night and day continued to day 4 before God created the sun and moon. He made them to rule the day and the night and for signs and for seasons and for days and for years. Incidentally, "he made the stars also" (Genesis 1:16). The sun, moon, and stars were made for the earth so that it would be a suitable place for the human race whom God would create.

In the Bible we learn that God's focus is upon His works on the earth and with the man whom He created. It is not focused on the rest of the universe. Scientists often focus on the vastness of the universe impressing us with the "fact" that the earth is one small piece of dust in the grand scheme of things and is possibly far less significant than some other elements. Millions are spent to make us believe that what we read in the Scriptures is not significant or maybe not even true. What if there is water on Mars? Big whoopee. What does that prove? When we look at the heavens at night we are awed by the vastness of it all, and we should be. But let us be awed by the God who created it. He made it all to bless us, and for His glory and pleasure (Revelation 4:11).

The earth is the beginning and center of God's creative acts. The earth was designed for the habitation of man. It is here that God sent His Son to redeem the man who rebelled against Him. It is here that He calls men to repentance and faith in Him. It is here that men are redeemed and prepared to spend eternity with Him. All other issues are peripheral. Many still ignore God's plan and spin their own ideas in rebellion against Him. Men still seek to explain away all Biblical evidence and still love to believe a lie. Does the earth move? I have no reson to believe so except what I have been told by the "scientific" community.

In the ages to come when God reveals all His secrets to His redeemed ones I want to be there. If in that time we are told that He allowed mankind to discover this "secret" of the universe, then I shall be satisfied. But until then, I will not trust in the wisdom of men, but in the Living God who created all things for His glory and for our blessing. Let us not lose our focus on the God who created us and the Lord Jesus Christ who redeemed us by His own blood. Thanks be to God for His unspeakable gift, the Lord Jesus Christ. Let us bow before Him, not before the god of science.
